PTZ cameras - what does it mean?

PTZ stands for PAN/TILT/ZOOM and is the name given to a particular type of camera where the user can control the movement and position of the lens remotely via the web or through specific software.

PAN is the horizontal (right/left) movement of the lens while TILT is the vertical (up/down) movement.

ZOOM, on the other hand, refers to the focal control of the lens that allows an object to be seen closer or further away. Although many cameras come with various sets of lenses for focal control, it is useful to know that a PTZ camera will almost certainly have an adjustable optical zoom included.

Because of these features, PTZ cameras are typically used in surveillance, video conferencing, lecture capture and distance learning applications.
